Pripoved o Stahlovi hiši je zapletena, če med ikoničnimi značilnostmi hiše in družino, ki je v njej živela, povlečemo jasno mejo. Toda to je ravno poanta – te meje ni. Hiša ni bila vedno znana, družina Stahl pa je, kot pravi Bruce Stahl, »družina modrih ovratnikov, ki živi v hiši belih ovratnikov«. Toda zakaj je hiša tako znana in kako je postala ena najbolj slavnih v Ameriki? No, začeti je treba pri lastniku in prvotnem oblikovalcu, C. H. »Bucku« Stahlu.

Buck in njegova žena Carlotta sta leta 1954 za 13.500 dolarjev kupila parcelo nad Los Angelesom. Razen spektakularnega razgleda je bil teren neprijazen, nevaren in težek za preoblikovanje v vizijo, ki si jo je Buck zamislil za svoj dom. Po poklicu grafični oblikovalec in slikar napisov se je z ženo najprej lotil prevoza ostankov cementa z gradbišč po mestu v prtljažniku avtomobila do parcele. Zemljišče je konec koncev potrebovalo neko ojačitev, da bi zemlja ostala stabilna in razvoj terena omogočil pripravo za gradnjo.

Zahtevno in drago vzdrževanje

Po dveh letih trdega dela konec tedna so se začele zarisovati ideje o oblikovanju hiše, zato je Buck napravil model, ki je izražal njune skupne sanje. Po nekaj zavrnitvah sta konec leta 1957 našla »ambicioznega in iznajdljivega mladega arhitekta« Pierra Koeniga. Pierre je bil edini, ki si je upal upoštevati impresivno konzolno temeljno konstrukcijo, ki je danes tako dih jemajoča. Bil je pionir gradnje hiš iz stekla in jekla. Končna geometrija in simetrija konstrukcije odraža mrežo mestnih ulic v dolini spodaj.

Pierre Koenig je projekt predlagal Johnu Entenzi, uredniku revije Arts & Architecture.  Leta 1959, približno mesec dni pred začetkom gradnje, je bil načrt sprejet v program Case Study Houses in tako je luč sveta ugledala​ Case Study House št. 22.

Gradnja je stala 37.500 dolarjev, čez 13 mesecev je bila hiša nared za vselitev. Vključuje bazen, približno 2200 kvadratnih metrov površine, dve spalnici, dve kopalnici in razgled, ki ga je težko opisati, a je široko znan.

Hiša kot turistična atrakcija

Zgrajeno hišo je fotografiral Julius Shulman. Fotografija v črno-beli tehniki prikazuje ravnotežje, popolnost in veličino te izjemne gradnje, znamenita fotografija pa je obveljala za najbolj ikonično fotografijo Los Angelesa, primerljivo z delom slavnih fotografov tistega časa.

Leta 1962 je revija Life objavila fotografijo Bucka Stahla “Way Up: Way of Living on California Cliffs”, na kateri Buck ureja okolico hiše približno 200 čevljev nad Sunset Boulevardom, z vrvjo, ki mu služi kot edina opora. Hiša se je pojavila tudi v številnih filmih in televizijskih serijah, med drugim v Columbu, Galaxy Questu in Nurse Betty, kar je še dodatno utrdilo njen kultni status. Leta 2007 so jo, ob strogih pravilih gibanja in omejitev fotografiranja, odprli za javnost.

Hiša ima dve spalnici, notranjih sten ni, posebnost sta osrednji kamin in bazen, ki se zdi, kot da se zliva z mestnimi lučmi v dolini. Postavitev v obliki črke L omogoča skoraj 360-stopinjski razgled na mesto, ocean in gore. Leta 1999 je bila razglašena za kulturnozgodovinsko spomenik, leta 2007 pa uvrščena na seznam ameriške arhitekturne dediščine. Po 65 letih je prvič na prostem trgu in je naprodaj za približno 25 milijonov dolarjev.
